**Race Entry Giveaway!!**CDM Mind & Body 5K Run/Walk & Wellness Expo

First off…let me tell you a little bit about CDM Mind & Body!

logo200-1

CDM Mind & Body is a platform for all things health…and you all KNOW how much I love my health and fitness!  They are your resource for health tips, motivation, information, how-to and much more…and I’ll be honest…who DOESN’T need all that stuff in their life?!  That’s right…we all do!!

And we can all thank Cynthia Ringo for making this all happen!  This St. Louis based group was formed in 2010 by Cynthia and was sponsored by Christ Deliverance Ministry.  After becoming a full-time caregiver for her husband (who had suffered a stroke and then developed vascular dementia as a result of that stroke), maintaining a healthy lifestyle became SUPER important to her because she knew if she didn’t care for herself…she wouldn’t be able to care for him.  So…with about 15 other women from their church, she started her journey to become her healthiest while inspiring others.

Guess what happened!

That small group of women (age span from 21 to 65 including two breast cancer survivors) lost over 600 pounds collectively and counting….WOW!!!!!!!

Since then…the original group of women along with others in the community decided to take back their lives and have grown this idea into a day-long health and fitness event sponsored by CDM (Christ Deliverance Ministry – a faith-based, non-profit organization dedicated to serving the St. Louis community).

This year, on May 28th,  come and enjoy the day at with this inspirational group!  There will be something for everyone!  The event takes place at Cardinal Ritter College Prep High School in Midtown St. Louis (701 North Spring Avenue, St. Louis, MO) and includes a 5K race (1st place can snag a $500 overall prize), a fitness challenge, a healthy living seminar and many lifestyle vendors.

This is going to be a day of fun that you DON’T want to miss!  Wanna find out more?  Go here and check out the answers to all those frequently asked questions.  Or better yet…just go sign up!  It’s only $35 for the 5K and the rest of the events that day are FREE!

Here is the best part!  CDM Mind & Body is wanting to offer one of you lucky readers and a guest of your choice a FREE entry for their 5K on May 28, 2016.  A winner will be picked by May 27th.  Enter below through Rafflecopter!

Practice grace with yourself…

As I sit here after working out and feeling very discouraged…I find myself doing the exact opposite of what I always preach…and that is not comparing my beginning to someone else’s middle.  It’s a hard thing when we know that we are capable of more but just aren’t back there yet.

Maybe something in life has made you have to step back and take a break or maybe you just got burnt out. For me, it was taking three months off to recover from a surgery.  I went from running half marathons to barely being able to run a ONE mile.

Whatever it is…we have to try and remember that this is only one little speck of our life…your stamina will come back…the squats won’t always hurt…you won’t always be winded…just keep pushing to do YOUR best and remember to practice a little grace with yourself…don’t be so hard on yourself and know that this is your best right NOW!

It’s getting MO’ Crazy up in here!

…and I mean way MO’ crazy than normal!!  I’m about to get SUPER busy promoting AND training for a race that is very near and dear to my heart!!  I love this race for many reason such as:

**It’s FLAT…or mostly flat…I mean..there is that ONE hill 🙂

(This is a USATF Certified Course and can be used as a qualifier for other races such as Boston, New York, etc.)

**It’s CLOSE…like roll out of bed at 7:00 for a 7:30 race start 🙂

**It’s got that home town race feel complete with scenery that is AMAZING!!!

**It is a race with a sense of humor

(the idea for the name came from a SNL skit featuring Will Ferrell)

and the number 1 reason I love this race….

**It was where I participated in my FIRST ever half-marathon last year (2013)

Yes!!  I’m talking about the MO’Cowbell

This year I was lucky enough to be chosen as one of the illustrious ambassadors(my code to use at registration is JWMCB14) for the MO’Cowbell here in St. Charles, Missouri!  I am beyond proud and so ready to spread the word about this awesome race that no one in this world should miss out on.

Be there or be square!!

The best part about this race date is that we have a race for all skill levels:  Marathon, Half Marathon, Half Marathon Relay and 5K!  And of course, walkers are always welcome.  Another plus is that the start and finish will both be in Frontier Park in Historic St. Charles (here are some directions to get there).  This makes it easy for everyone to meet back up with their loved ones after the race to celebrate your accomplishments 🙂

After the race, you will get to go enjoy yourself at the Post-Race Party of refreshments including chocolate milk, bananas, chips, beer and more!  There will also be food trucks for spectators and live music by the Rough Ryders from 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.

In addition to the race, there will also be a Health and Fitness ExMO’ on Friday (10/3) and Saturday (10/4) where you can pick up your race packet (there is NO race day packet pickup) and also check out some awesome vendors! (Do you want to be a vendor?…go here)  You do not want to miss this!  There will be lots of merchandise to buy as well as lots of freebies and a wealth of information.  I bought a really cool “Suck It Up” BondiBand at last years ExMO’ for super cheap (see below in picture).  There are already a bunch of vendors signed up for this year…check it out here!

Dreams and Promises….Part 2

….So…..I survived!  I didn’t finish like I wanted to finish but I finished nevertheless!!!
AND THAT IS WHAT MATTERS!!!

I started out this race feeling great!!  I had decided to stick with a friend of mine who was participating in the Half-Marathon Relay.  There was her first timed race, as well as the longest run she has done so far.  Needless to say, she was a little nervous.
We started off and the miles just seemed to slip away and before you know it, we were at mile 5.  At this point, I pulled a little ahead and met up with our other friend who was taking the second half of the relay.  I had planned on sticking with her during her part also.  Little did I know….my body had other plans for me.

I was still feeling pretty good and until about mile 8 and then I felt it….my knee started to hurt a little and was doing this popping thing.  I stopped and tried stretching out and kept doing that for at least a mile before my knee just went completely.  At this point, I could not run at all.  I could not even bend it without it feeling severe pain.  I continued on though because I was bound and determined to finish this race.  And by continue on…I mean…I walked two miles up a hill (the ONLY hill pretty much on this race) with one leg that would not bend at all.  The weather also decided to turn chilly and the wind came out in full force and then the sun said good-bye to us and hid behind a sky full of clouds.  I’m sure I made a silly sight to watch with my gimpy walk and shivering body 🙂
At mile 12, my knee had rested enough that I could do a slow hobble run which I was able to keep up until I crossed that beautiful finish line.  I was greeted by my two pals who had done the relay and there were congratulations and hugs to go around.  I grabbed my awesome medal (see below), a bottled water and I headed straight for the medical tent where I had an amazing angel of a girl stretch my hips out and my legs.  She also handed me the equivalent of gold to a runner…a baggie of ice!!!  JACKPOT!!
1186113_10201537945281967_2126678187_n
After getting special love and care at the medical tent, I made my way over to the sea of goodies to eat and stocked up on some cinnamon bread, a banana and some amazing Lays plain potato chips (are they not the BEST after a run?!).  We milled around for just a short time and then it was just so chilly and windy that we decided to head home.  I also passed a guy who seemed to be suffering the same fate as I…okay…maybe a little worse since he was curled up in fetal position on the sidewalk.  Since I was heading home, I passed on my bag of gold (a.k.a. bag of ice) to this poor chap who was GREATLY appreciative!  I was glad to help 🙂
Here I am in all my glory!!  I’m super proud of myself for following through with the training and finishing this race!  I can now proudly say that I’m part of the half-marathon club.
1383914_10201535042129390_799960745_n
Of course, I can also safely say that I have also caught the bug…I’m already itching to sign up for the next one (which will be the Go! St. Louis Half-Marathon in April 2014)!
For now though, I’m staying off the knee as much as possible and have become best friend with my ice packs.
Here is my final time….like I said…I was hoping for better but I will take what I got!
Proud either way!
Finished:  3:18:37

Half-Marathon Training Starts…..NOW!!!

Woo hoo!!! It’s official!

untitled

Training for my first ever Half-Marathon has commenced.

Here is what my coming week looks like as far as training!

Monday – 2 miles
Tuesday – Cross-Train
Wednesday – 2 miles
Thursday – 3 miles
Friday – Cross-Train
Saturday – 3 miles
Sunday – Rest Day
Total Miles = 10 miles

Right now, I’m looking at signing up for the MO’ Cowbell Half-Marathon here in St. Charles, MO on Sunday, October 6th. I’m thinking this will be the perfect one for my first race since it’s pretty flat. Hills are truly not my strong suit so as flat as we can be…the better.  Check out this elevation….some incline around mile 10 but otherwise flat!!!

MOCowbellHalfCourseMap2013-796x1024

Today, I needed to get in two miles which is no problem because that is about what I’ve been doing for the last couple of months. These first couple of weeks should be pretty easy…it’s the weeks after those that will be the test. The longest run I’ve done is 6.1 miles so we shall see…we shall see!! I’m feeling very positive about this experience though!

I know I can do it!!

Someone please remind me off this in a few weeks when I’m questioning my sanity 🙂  This cartoon so reminds me of myself!  I always end up talking myself out of it…but this year is MY year!!!

Fear of Failure Marathon Cartoon

This morning, I went ahead a got up early to do my run since I have lots going on after work today. Promised the kiddos that we would go and see Monsters University at the movie theater tonight in addition to a billion other things I need to get done. The morning run went pretty good except for the fact that I ate dairy this past weekend (dang you Culver’s and your amazing custard!), and currently feel like a have a large rock in my stomach. I’ve been pretty much steering clear of dairy in general because I know that I have a sensitivity to it…but I just couldn’t help myself and now I suffer. It’s a sad day, but I think that dairy needs to go bye-bye at least during my training. Hopefully by the time training is over, I won’t even want it at all!

It was however…super humid this morning even given the early hour….definitely a #SWEAT PINK day!!

Question(s) of the day….

What races are you signing up for this year?

What are your favorite non-dairy replacements for your favorite dairy foods?

Holiday Recap, Half-Marathon Training & Yummy Food

I’m going to play a little catch up with you all…I’ve not really posted much lately but it has been a little crazy in my neck of the woods and I just haven’t had the chance to really get on here and blog. So here we go….

This past weekend, I went to visit with my mom and step dad (and Sadie & Skeeter – their pups) for the holiday! Now first let me say, that I do not get to go to my mom’s as often as I should (it’s really only about an hour and a half away but life is always getting in the way), but when we go, it is always so relaxing! She literally lives practically in the middle of no-where 🙂 A little town by the name of Old Mines, MO. I grew up going to the church here and have many fond memories of the Fall Festivals there…FUN TIMES!!

We spent most of the our weekend just chillin’ on the porch watching the day go by…playin’ with the puppies…finding treasures in the old barn…eating some yummy food…and shooting off a few fireworks. Oh…and we can’t forget swatting those pesky mosquitoes…they sure love me and my kiddos for some reason! We all look like we have the chicken pox’s…ugh!!  Check out the amazing views from my mom’s front porch…BEAUTIFUL!!

The hubby and I also snuck off to explore one of the old cemeteries that is down the road from my mom’s at St. Joachim Catholic Church (the one I went to as a child). There are three different cemeteries right in this same area but I love this one the most!  This cemetery is so interesting because there is so much history attached to it. Some dating back to the early 1800’s…some you couldn’t even read…some were just steel crosses with no writing…one young man who died in an explosion on a steamer ship…and some are even unmarked because the markers are no longer there. Check out some of what we found!

This one says "Born in Bohemia". I thought that was cool!

Now, when I go to my mom’s, I usually have to bring some meals with me since I eat so much differently (my friends and family say that I eat twigs, berries & bark….lol) than the rest of my family (I’m a health nut and the rest of them are not…plus I do the whole dairy-free as much as I can thing…and the no red meat thing). We were planning on having a BBQ on Saturday so I decided to make lots of little side dishes that would be me-friendly 🙂

I made some amazing Quinoa Fruit Salad that I found at Two Peas & Their Pod. The only thing I left out (I admit it…I forgot to buy it…ugh) was the fresh mint but it was awesome all the same. It was even pretty tasty the next day when I scarfed delicately ate scarfed some more down. I highly recommend making this sometime this summer when the fruit is in season.

I also made some yummy Tomato Kick Bean Dip from my pal Linz at It’s Linz. The only thing I changed was that I used chickpeas instead of great northern beans but only because that is what I had on hand. It was so light and yummy! Ate it with veggies…ate it with pita chips…ate it by the spoonful (okay…just kidding on that last one…or am I?) Even my mom ended up liking it!

I also made another dish that I had torn out of a magazine at some point (not even sure which but probably Home & Garden). Here is the recipe if you would like to try it out!

Creamy Cabbage & Sweet Corn Slaw
Prep Time: 10 min
Total Time: 20 min

Ingredients
2 tbsp sour cream
2 tbsp lime juice
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
¼ tsp salt
1 scallion (finely sliced)
1/4 small head cabbage (I cheated and used the already shredded bagged kind).
¼ cup corn kernels (I used a fresh ear of corn that I had baked in the oven)
2 tbsp fresh cilantro (optional but I highly recommend)

In a medium bowl, whisk together the sour cream, lime juice, cayenne pepper and salt. Add in the cabbage and the corn and toss to coat. Let sit, tossing occasionally, for 10 minutes. Fold in the scallion and the cilantro. EAT and ENJOY!

It really turned out super good! I was pleasantly surprised for sure. Thinking I might make this and add it to a salad next time…hmmmm…oh so many options!!

My weekend ended up being a really great time! Love seeing my mom and visiting with her…I miss her dearly and wish I could see her more!  Although, what would my luck be if I didn’t have a little bit of bad luck….thankfully it waited till we were about one minute from home before it blew up!

IMG_20130711_012812

I finally am making the leap into the Half-Marathon world! I begin official training for the MO Cowbell Half-Marathon on October 6th starting on Monday!! This will be my first race over 10K and I’m super excited! I’ve chickened out every year but I’m bound and determined to join the ranks with the rest of you that have a Half under your belt. This week, I’ve kept my mileage the same as what it will be next week and it’s going great so far! We shall see how it goes for the next 12 weeks 😉

Question(s) of the day:

How was your holiday weekend?

Have you trained/participated in a Half-Marathon? What are your tips for getting through this in one piece?
