**Race Entry Giveaway!!**CDM Mind & Body 5K Run/Walk & Wellness Expo

First off…let me tell you a little bit about CDM Mind & Body!

logo200-1

CDM Mind & Body is a platform for all things health…and you all KNOW how much I love my health and fitness!  They are your resource for health tips, motivation, information, how-to and much more…and I’ll be honest…who DOESN’T need all that stuff in their life?!  That’s right…we all do!!

And we can all thank Cynthia Ringo for making this all happen!  This St. Louis based group was formed in 2010 by Cynthia and was sponsored by Christ Deliverance Ministry.  After becoming a full-time caregiver for her husband (who had suffered a stroke and then developed vascular dementia as a result of that stroke), maintaining a healthy lifestyle became SUPER important to her because she knew if she didn’t care for herself…she wouldn’t be able to care for him.  So…with about 15 other women from their church, she started her journey to become her healthiest while inspiring others.

Guess what happened!

That small group of women (age span from 21 to 65 including two breast cancer survivors) lost over 600 pounds collectively and counting….WOW!!!!!!!

Since then…the original group of women along with others in the community decided to take back their lives and have grown this idea into a day-long health and fitness event sponsored by CDM (Christ Deliverance Ministry – a faith-based, non-profit organization dedicated to serving the St. Louis community).

This year, on May 28th,  come and enjoy the day at with this inspirational group!  There will be something for everyone!  The event takes place at Cardinal Ritter College Prep High School in Midtown St. Louis (701 North Spring Avenue, St. Louis, MO) and includes a 5K race (1st place can snag a $500 overall prize), a fitness challenge, a healthy living seminar and many lifestyle vendors.

This is going to be a day of fun that you DON’T want to miss!  Wanna find out more?  Go here and check out the answers to all those frequently asked questions.  Or better yet…just go sign up!  It’s only $35 for the 5K and the rest of the events that day are FREE!

Here is the best part!  CDM Mind & Body is wanting to offer one of you lucky readers and a guest of your choice a FREE entry for their 5K on May 28, 2016.  A winner will be picked by May 27th.  Enter below through Rafflecopter!

I cannot believe how fast the months are flying by! I’m not ready for school to start…I’m not ready for summer to end….I’m just ready for time to slow down a little…ya know?  However, it is Friday and that makes me happy….as does this picture…Enjoy!

First off, let me start off by saying that yesterday was me and the hubby’s 4TH Wedding Anniversary! We have some bad times and just as many good times! I love him more today than yesterday and can’t wait to spend many more years driving him crazy adoring him…oh who am I kidding…driving him crazy with a little adoration thrown in 🙂  We spent our evening hanging out over dinner at Lewis & Clark’s in St. Charles, MO.  Man, I love that place!  Sooo yummy! They did not disappoint this time either…I had the Mahi Mahi, baked potato (w/salsa) and a dinner salad (sorry…no pictures )…okay!…I also had a very fudge-y, chocolate-y, heavenly brownie that I got to bring home and scarf down later.  It didn’t last long after I arrived home 😉

My amazing hubby and I - August 1, 2009

My amazing hubby and I – August 1, 2009

Now on to the major reason for this blog today. I want to tell you guys about something amazing!!!

Last Saturday, I did something that I’ve never done before! I went to…and ran in…a race…ALL BY MYSELF!!!  For me, that is huge! I’m a very shy (dare I say…anxiety-filled) person who constantly worries what others are thinking about me. (Constant thoughts running through my head… “Are they looking at me?” “Oh crap…is there something on me?” “Why are they staring at me?…oh…never mind…they are looking for the bathrooms” “They are probably wondering why I’m alone!” “Oh no…they are talking about me…they must think I’m weird”) It is truly a stressful way to be but it’s who I am and I can only try to push past my insecurities.

Any way…the thought of going by myself and not knowing anyone there was a bit freighting and stressful to say the least.

BUT…..

I DID IT!!!! And I’m extremely glad that I did!!

And I’m glad for a few reasons. One…because conquering one’s fears is one of the best feelings there is. And Two…because if I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have gotten to be a part of something amazing!

I ran in the 1st Annual Running for Rooms 5K that benefits Special Spaces. Special Spaces is a non-profit organization that has one simple mission and that is to “create dream bedrooms for children with life-threatening illnesses. A place that only the child can dream or imagine while addressing their medical needs”.

IMG_20130730_073049

Special Spaces was founded in July 2004 and as of today has created over 90 dream bedrooms. The St. Louis chapter was started in 2011 and they have been able to complete 10 rooms (check one of them out here) and they currently have 9 children on their waiting list.  One room usually costs around $2,500 to complete so any help that they receive is greatly appreciated!  Every little bit helps!!!  Do you wanna help?

There are many ways that you can help out:
Volunteer: Special Spaces is always looking for volunteers to help with room renovations & fundraising in the St. Louis and surrounding communities.
Donate: Your generosity allows them to create beautiful dream bedrooms for children with life-threatening illnesses at no cost to the families.
Sponsorship: They welcome individual, group, and corporate sponsorships to provide finances, materials and services to renovate these special bedrooms.
Smile: Every Special Spaces Project has the same reaction, lots of great SMILES from our children, their families and our volunteers.

I encourage everyone to just go to their website and see what they are all about! I know for sure that my family and I will be volunteering our time very soon! I definitely want to get involved in the race planning for next year!  And I would love to be a part of one (or more) of their room builds….Seeing the smiles on these kiddos faces would be the coolest thing ever!

The race this year and most likely in the future was held at Quail Ridge Park in Wentzville, MO. The weather was amazing for once and there was a slight breeze…you can’t beat that!! With 114 participants overall between the 5K and the 1-mile walk, this race ended up with a great group of people. The support and camaraderie that was in the air was refreshing and a feeling like no other!

The course was a bit more hilly than I’m used to training on but the views were beautiful and the course was great! And something else that was cool….finishing the 5K in 28:04!!! That was way better than I was thinking my time would be and was very happy with how I felt during and after!

Question(s) of the day:

Do you have a charity that you believe in? What is it?

How do you feel about racing alone? Yay or Nay?

What is one thing you are doing this weekend?

The Graffiti Run & Giveaway!

IMG_20130608_185935

This past weekend, I participated in The Graffiti Run with a group of girls that I work with!!!

WE HAD A BLAST!!!!  CAN YOU TELL?

After the race!

All week, it kept saying that there was a chance for thunderstorms in the morning and in the afternoon which would have put a total damper on the day in my opinion but we were super excited anyway!  We spent the week before making our tutu’s and then in the end I decided to make us matching sparkly headbands to complete our ensembles 🙂

Check out some of our pics from our colorific day!

Jumping & Tossing color in the air

And after.... :)

And after…. 🙂

The entire race was a blast…it was not timed so not pressure…just loads of fun!  The only mishap was at the first color station where I came across a very enthusiastic color thrower….with a grin on his face, he took a full cup of bright pink powder and tossed it directly in my face…ugh!!  Soooo not prepared for that…mouth was open…I wasn’t holding my breath yet so needless to say…lots of powder when in my mouth and up my nose.  Check it out!

The rest of the race went great and even though it wasn’t timed, I still kept a watch on my time and ended up finishing the 5K (3.1 miles) in around 34 minutes which I’m very happy with!   Had a great time at the after party!  Very messy and fun! We also ended up with NO rain at all until we were halfway home! It was the perfect weather…sunny with a breeze!

The only downfall of the whole day was:

  1.  there was no food afterwards unless you paid for it (umm…hello…who carries cash on them at a race?!) and,
  2. getting out of the parking lot afterwards was CRAZY!!!  They had no one directing traffic out of this event which cause mass confusion and mass madness!!  People were getting stressed sitting in their cars covered in powder and just wanting to take a shower!  Instead, we sat in our cars for an hour trying to figure out when we might get home….ugh!!

This was my second race that I’ve done that relates to color and have already signed up for The Color Run – STL in September!  I love them!  They are so much fun and I recommend them to everyone!  You should try it at least once 🙂

Memorial Weekend: Injinji, Sweat Pink, Fossils & More

First and foremost, I would like to say thank you to all our servicemen, past and present. Your dedication and sacrifice are greatly appreciated.

** NOTE:  I totally had this whole post typed up and then something horrible happened….my computer went on the fritz and I lost everything…even the draft that I had saved…grrrrr…Instead of retyping it right then and there…I pouted a little and then decided to just retype it out today! One day late is better than not at all…right?! 

Our weekend started off with some last-minute BBQ plans at one of our friends’ garage. My daughter was with her dad this weekend so the hubby and I just hung out at the garage and let our son run crazy for the evening. He absolutely loves it there as he can play in the dirt with his monster trucks, chase Max (the dog) around, play on the crawlin’ rigs like he is driving them. We even caught him working on one of the Jeeps out there…What a great helper!

20130524_213500Saturday was spent lounging in bed late and then lunch with my two favorite men (hubby & son) From there, we headed home so that I could sneak a run in. Decided to take a different route this time and am now pretty sure that it is my favorite route. On this run, I decided to try out the Injinji socks that I received in my RunnerBox. I will just say, that I truly didn’t know about these socks because they are “toe socks”….and I’m in no way a fan of the “toe sock”. They drive me nuts usually. I tried them any way though, because they are supposed to help with blisters (which I get all the time).

IMG_20130525_073943

I want to go on record now by saying that I’m a true fan of the Injinji socks!! They felt amazing!! Once I had my shoes on, they felt no different from any other socks. They are super comfy and super thin….like wearing nothing at all! Will for sure be purchasing more of these bad boys! I also had on my new and AWESOME Sweat Pink laces!! They are super cute and of course love that they match my shoes! And I must say, that the combination of those socks and those laces must have made me feet magic because I ended up getting a PR on a 5K during this run! Jackpot!!!

Sunday, found us at August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area where some of my hubbys’ friends were having an RC Car Competition near Lake 35. There are lots of rocks and beautiful scenery so my son and I set off to do a little exploring.

IMG_20130527_025729 IMG_20130527_025707

We ended up finding some amazing fossils (Man….I want to be an archeologist so bad when I grow up). These fossils were awesome to see…I just wish I knew what it was. I know some of them are probably from fish but I’m not sure that they even exist anymore….the area we found them was originally covered by tons of rock that was blasted out when the lakes were made. Check them out!

IMAG0934IMG_20130527_025639

Kaleb conned his dad into letting him play with the RC Car for a little bit and had the best time! He had the hardest time though staying out of the water and eventually took a slide down an area causing him to be soaked…didn’t even faze him…he just kept on going! Thankfully, it was super warm and he dried pretty quickly…he was only left with a huge mud mark on his britches.

IMG_20130527_025439The rest of the beautiful day we had, was spent playing at the park. We did some climbing on the “spider web”, some climbing on the rock wall, a little see-saw action and of course some walking with our dog Franklin. Ended up staying there until dark…we were all exhausted for sure!

On Monday, we spent the day trying to keep dry mostly. My husband has a Suzuki Samauri and he insists on taking the doors off every chance he gets. I told him it was supposed to rain, he said 20% chance. We decided to head to one of my Top 10 places to eat….Qdoba…where I ordered their amazing Chicken Mango Salad. We sit down to eat and then the downpour started….I just looked at my husband and said, “Well, we can take our time eating!” Thankfully the rain didn’t last long and MY seat didn’t get too wet…I can’t say the same for the hubby’s 😉 After lunch, we headed to a car show! We go to these any chance we can and this one turned out to be pretty cool! Saw some pretty neat cars and they also had tons of antiques to look at, which I love! Here is a little of what he found…

And you can’t forget the amazing snow cone I got (Tiger’s Blood and Pina Colada)!!! Yummy!!!

IMG_20130527_025122

After that, we just headed home and hung around the house for the rest of the evening because of the off and on raining all day. It did finally stop raining that evening in enough time to let me get my run in! I decided to participate in the Runner’s World Summer Run Streak which is where From Memorial Day to Independence Day, you run at least one mile, every day.

So that’s that for the weekend! It was fun-filled for sure….not set in stone plans….just doing what we wanted to do whenever we wanted! Just the way I like my weekends!

Questions of the day…..

Are you participating in the Runner’s World Summer Run Streak?

Snow cones….Love or Hate?

Keep Calm & Run Strong + Giveaway Coming Soon

The other day, I had one of the best runs I’ve had in a long time. I’ve just recently, in the last couple of months, started running again after some health problems that I’d had over the last two years. At this point, I’m just trying to get back to the miles I could do before I had to stop.  I have a problem though and it’s a doozy…..

The problem that I have is mostly in my head though….I’m totally my own worst enemy! I start getting “tired” and then I walk instead of just pushing thru and doing it! I know I can….but it still happens every time….ugh!

keep-calm-and-run-strong

Not this time though! I kept calm and ran strong 🙂

I had decided to run to the nearest gas station to grab a water and then was going to run back. I was feeling great when I took off and before I knew it….I had done a mile without ever stopping to walk!!!! And I might add, there was a steady incline during that whole mile!

I wanted to stop a few times but I pushed thru the pain. I got to the gas station shortly after, grabbed a water and two Laffy Taffy’s (yes…I love those little guys), consumed those and then headed back….which I ran the whole way also!! Given….it was mostly downhill until the end where it started inclining again. I did my cool down and finished with 2.36 miles!!! I did my first mile in 9:35…that is the fastest I’ve done it since returning to running.

I’m proud to say the least! And I won’t lie….I did a fist pump in the air when my Nike+ running app told me that I had done the mile and then did another fist pump when I heard my pace time! The people driving past me may have thought me slightly crazy with my fist pumping and huge grin on my face but I DON’T CARE!!! I felt AWESOME!!!!

images

In addition to my running, I’m trying to workout 3-4 times a week because 1) I need to for my own sanity and 2) it helps me with my running. I’m currently doing some arm workouts in addition to taking the 30 Day Crunch Challenge and the 30 Day Squat Challenge that I found on AprilAthena7‘s blog (which is pretty awesome also). Currently on Day 4 which is a rest day today…thank goodness…because my gluteus maximus butt is hurting!!! Have I noticed a difference? My hubby thinks so 😉

Coming soon…..I have some reviews coming up in the next week or two and I’m also going to be having my very first ever GIVEAWAY!!!! I’m sooo excited!! Come back to see what it is!!!

And one last inspirational picture that feels very fitting for me….Need to remember this every run or workout (especially during burpees and rock climbers)  🙂

See you soon! Run strong!!

Sweat Pink Ambassador

SWEAT + PINK + AMBASSADOR = TONS OF FUN & SUPPORT!!!

Fit Approach Sweat Pink Blog Badge

I found out last week that I was picked to join an amazing group of people called Sweat Pink Ambassadors…and I’m super excited to say the least.  Some of you might know what a Sweat Pink Ambassador is, but for those that don’t, let me tell you a little bit about the program.

SPA (Sweat Pink Ambassador) is a part of the website Fit Approach.  Fit Approach is a health & fitness community that is filled with a wide-range of supportive people sharing their love for health and fitness and their experiences with it.  There is a great link on their page that is a Q & A page!!  Go check it out here!

It was founded by two strong women (Jamie Walker & Alyse Mason Brill).  Their mission statement is amazing…Check it out!

Mission

We believe that kicking ass is best done in pretty shoes. We’ve learned that real women sweat, and sweat hard. We know that assertiveness, strength, and ambition are the ultimate feminine qualities. We concede that sometimes it takes hours to get ready, but we’re also no strangers to just rolling out of bed and going. We’re convinced that we run faster in pink shoelaces. We believe in pushing ourselves, and we believe in giving ourselves a break, too. We’re all about the rush of endorphins and the thrill of the challenge. We’re all for looking  great and feeling even better. We’re committed to finding our best fit, and making it stick.

How do we get there? We climb. We journey. We balance. We reward.

So now you know about Fit Approach but what about SPA?  Well, the Sweat Pink Movement is the brain child of Jamie & Alyse.  It’s a place where “tough and girly come together”.  It’s sharing your healthy accomplishments with others.  It’s living a healthy lifestyle and enjoying it.  It’s being positive and pushing through.  It’s supporting and empowering others to want to live a healthy life.  It’s wearing pink and still kicking ass!

As an ambassador, I hope to inspire others to live healthy and stay active.  I hope to introduce others to something new (an exercise, a recipe, information regarding a product, an inspirational saying…whatever it may be).  I hope to instill the same passion for health & fitness in others that I have.  I hope to support others in their strive for their best.  I hope to push myself to be strong!  I just hope to be the best I can be!  And I will do it SWEATING PINK!!!

So, here’s the question?  Do you have it in you to be an SPA?  If the answer is yes…then go and check out the program and fill out the application!  Hope to see some of you there!

Motivational May & Sweat Pink Ambassador!!!!!

I have been meaning to do a post of my May goals but just haven’t found the time and it’s already the 10th…ugh!  However,  I found a post yesterday that Jenna at Fitness & The City  had written that sparked me to get this post done! I’m going to join up with her and others for the “30 miles in 30 days” Challenge that is hosted by Nikki at The Pink Growl.  Come check it out and join with us!!

As of my run last night, I’m at 11.52 miles for the month so far!  So….18.48 left to go 🙂  Being that this month has already been super busy for me…that is great!!

Also….something AMAZING happened yesterday!!!

Sweat-Pink-ambassador-badge1

I got an email from Alyse & Jamie at Fit Approach informing me that I had been chosen to join the Sweat Pink Ambassador community!!!!!   I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am to have been picked to join!!  More to come on this opportunity soon 🙂

Hope everyone has a great day!!
